(Proverbs 14:12)  There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.

Within the heart of every person there reside two driving desires. The first is the desire to know God, the creator of all. The next if left unchecked, is the very thing that leads us away from God. This is the desire for self-governance, or independence.

These two forces are diametrically opposed to one another. The first, a desire to know God, was part of God’s creation, while the second, an independent spirit, came into the world with the sin nature that we inherited from Adam.

No matter what nationality or socioeconomic situation we may come from, we are born with a desire to have a relationship with God Almighty. However, if that desire is not properly cultivated and directed toward God, we will find ourselves filled with our own rebellious ideas, which will actually lead us away from Him.

You see every person believes that the path they have chosen is the right way. Even the hardest criminal if asked will quickly tell you that they are somehow justified in their actions. Without God’s law to bring conviction and expose our sin, we will become convinced that no matter how warped our thinking may be we are somehow right. This is the independent spirit that I am talking about. Only God is truly just, and able to bring light to the darkness of the human heart.

God knows that if a child is left to their own devices the independent spirit (rebellion) that came into their spirit through sin will lead them away from God into a life of depravation.

A child who will not listen to their parent’s correction will eventually reap the unfortunate consequences if they continue to rebel.

(Psalm 58:3)  The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies.

Just as a loving parent guides, and corrects their children through discipline, God also brings discipline to humanity through our conscience, and by the instruction of His word. Humanity is reaping the consequences for rebellion and independence from God.

(Proverbs 3:11-12) My child, don’t ignore it when the LORD disciplines you, and don’t be discouraged when he corrects you. For the LORD corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights.

As a result of rejecting the teachings, and corrections of God, people are filled with the consequences of their actions, yet in their rebellion, they mistakenly imagine that God is the culprit behind their suffering.

(Proverbs 19:3)  People ruin their lives by their own foolishness and then are angry at the LORD.

(Psalm 9:16-17)  The LORD is known by the judgment He executes; The wicked is snared in the work of his own hands.

One of the most difficult things for a person to do is humble themselves and seek God’s forgiveness. Pride and rebellion lead people to imagine all sorts of vain beliefs that result in even more pain and suffering. Like a rebellious teenager, they stubbornly refuse to accept God’s correction, and harden their hearts against any attempt He may make to turn them from their folly. In the end God, like a grieved parent will allow them to go their way, with often painful consequences to their lives.

(Proverbs 15:10-12)Whoever abandons the right path will be severely punished; whoever hates correction will die. Even the depths of Death and Destruction are known by the LORD. How much more does he know the human heart! Mockers don’t love those who rebuke them, so they stay away from the wise.
