Covering Our Nakedness

No amount of human philosophy or wisdom will ever lead man to understand the ways of God.

The consequence of sin has been far greater than most people can ever imagine. Because of sin people are estranged from God, and therefore separated from His ways.

Before Adam and Eve sinned they had perfect fellowship with God, and lived in harmony with one another and their surroundings. Once sin entered their being it immediately began to twist their understanding. They suddenly were filled with the guilt that came as a result of their actions and attempted to cover their shame by making fig leaves to hide their nakedness.

(Genesis 3:7 NKJV) Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

Rather than turning to God for mercy they instead hide from God. (Genesis 3:10 NKJV)  So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”

Man has tried to cover his guilt ever since by hiding behind every sort of fig leaf of his own making, from religion to atheism. He has busied himself with every sort of pursuit to persuade himself that he is not guilty before a holy God. Yet no matter how hard he tries he is hopelessly lost, and the reality of his sin remains. Sin has separated us from God, and nothing we can ever do will hide the fact that we are guilty.

After God has confronted Adam and Eve about their disobedience, and revealed the consequences of their sin He kills an animal, and temporarily covers their nakedness. (Genesis 3:21 NLT)  And the LORD God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife.

In this act God reveals a powerful truth. He sacrifices an innocent animal to pay for the guilt of their sin. One day He would send His Son, the Lamb of God, to pay for the sins of the whole world. The blood of the innocent paying the price to take away the sins of the whole world.

(Romans 5:17-19 NLT)  The sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over us, but all who receive God’s wonderful, gracious gift of righteousness will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ. {18} Yes, Adam’s one sin brought condemnation upon everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness makes all people right in God’s sight and gives them life. {19} Because one person disobeyed God, many people became sinners. But because one other person obeyed God, many people will be made right in God’s sight.

As a result of the sacrifice of Christ, all who will turn from their sin, humble themselves and call upon Him can receive the free gift of God’s eternal life.

(John 3:16-21 NLT)  “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. {17} God did not send his Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it. {18} “There is no judgment awaiting those who trust him. But those who do not trust him have already been judged for not believing in the only Son of God. {19} Their judgment is based on this fact: The light from heaven came into the world, but they loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. {20} They hate the light because they want to sin in the darkness. They stay away from the light for fear their sins will be exposed and they will be punished. {21} But those who do what is right come to the light gladly, so everyone can see that they are doing what God wants.”
