The Radical Christian

(Luke 9:59-62 NLT) He said to another person, “Come, be my disciple.” The man agreed, but he said, “Lord, first let me return home and bury my father.” Jesus replied, “Let those who are spiritually dead care for their own dead. Your duty is to go and preach the coming of the Kingdom of God.” Another said, “Yes, Lord, I will follow you, but first let me say good-bye to my family.” But Jesus told him, “Anyone who puts a hand to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God.”

In these passages alone, we can see the radical nature of the gospel of Jesus Christ. This is much different than what our presentation of Christ has become in this age of compromise.

”Let nothing short of radical change of heart satisfy you in your coverts…” William Carey, the pioneer missionary to India

Radical: (The Oxford Dictionary) ‘Radical comes from the Latin word radix, meaning “a root.” Radical is therefore going to the root or origin; touching or acting upon what is essential and fundamental; or thorough.’

(Webster’s Dictionary) ‘It is marked by a considerable departure from the usual or traditional…disposed to make extreme changes in existing views, habits, conditions or institutions.’

“The God of the Bible is radical in all His dealings with men. This fact was most clearly and powerfully demonstrated in the life and ministry of His Son, Jesus Christ. The kingdom of God is therefore utterly radical in its demands…A true radical of the kingdom is a man who stands on clear ground in relation to truth. He cannot compromise his conscience, tamper with his convictions, or bend biblical principles for the sake of status or security. Though he does not court unpopularity for its own sake, he is not afraid of it if it comes. His concern is to obey God and leave the consequences with Him. All forms of unreality or pretense are anathema to him. In words and actions, he is captive to principle rather than expedience. This means that he will not hesitate to speak the truth in love for fear of hurting someone’s feelings. Nor is he happy to ignore matters, which need to be raised, in order to avoid an unpleasant confrontation. In the kingdomof Godradicalism means unswerving righteousness.” Arthur Wallis, ‘The Radical Christian’

When we consider the words of Arthur Wallis in relation to the statements of Jesus, we begin to see that we have allowed the fear of man to contaminate the presentation of the gospel. Many Christians have fallen prey to this deceptive snare of the enemy.

We have turned the gospel into the tolerance message. “Come to Jesus, and He will give you love joy, happiness, and a better life.” While these are byproducts of salvation, we should not forget that God demands that we repent as well. This presentation of the gospel has created a weak compromising Christianity lacking the power to deliver men from sin.

“Truth is not negotiable. The urgency of the cross cannot be financed into easy payments. Here is the church’s shocking dilemma: What do you say to a generation that is flat wrong-and keep them listening.” Mario Murillo ‘Fresh Impact’

Are You a Good Person?

Would you consider yourself a good person? When most people are asked this question they usually respond with, “Yes, I think I am.” This certainly seems like a reasonable answer doesn’t it? Especially if we were to compare the average person’s goodness with the likes of say Adolph Hitler, or Charles Manson.

When we compare ourselves with other people we may not measure up to some like a Mother Teresa, but we are not as bad as others either. This leaves the average person feeling pretty secure for the most part.

Now what if I were to ask the question, does God think you are a good person? God is holy, absolutely perfect, without any defect, or blemish. He is light without the slightest trace of darkness at all. This seems almost unimaginable to us doesn’t it?

The Bible actually describes God as the sun shining in its full strength. (Revelation 1:16) We all know how difficult it would be to look at the sun even for a second in its full intensity. Yet this is how brilliant God really is.

Let me give you an illustration. A man was driving down a country road one day, when he noticed a flock of white sheep eating in a green grassy field. They looked so clean and white against the backdrop of the grass. Latter during the winter, he was driving down the same road after a freshly fallen snow. When he saw the sheep this time, they no longer looked white and clean. Instead they looked extremely dirty.

Now the question is this. Did the sow make the sheep dirty, or simply expose the dirt that was already there? Obviously it only exposed the dirt. This is exactly what God’s word, the Bible does. When people compare their lives to the standards of the world around them, they may look pretty clean. However, they were to lay the commandments of God along side our lives, they will soon discover that they are actually very sinful.

Just think of a few of the 10 commandments for instance, to see how well you have kept them.

Commandment number 9 says, “You shall not lie.” Have you ever told a lie? Even a white lie is still a lie. Yes, everyone has at sometime. This makes you a liar. Even a single lie qualifies.

Commandment number 8 says, “You shall not steal.” Have you ever stolen something? The value makes no difference. This makes you a thief.

Commandment number 7 says, “You shall not commit adultery.” Jesus said that if you even looked at a woman to lust after them sexually, you have committed adultery in your heart. This makes you an adulterer at heart.

We have only looked at three of the 10 Commandments, and would all have to admit that we have all broken all of these at one time or another. By breaking God’s Commandments we are sinners, and the wages of sin is death. God is just, and His justice demands to be fulfilled. He would never allow, murderers, or liars, or sexually immoral people into His Kingdom, because they would pollute everyone else.

So if God were to judge you by the standard of His commandments, would you be innocent or guilty? You would be guilty.

Would you go to heaven or hell? The answer is you would end up in hell. I hope that concerns you, because your eternal soul is of far greater value than even your eyes. It is priceless.

The good news is that God does not want to cast you into hell. So He loved you so much that he sent His Son Jesus to pay the penalty for your lawlessness, by giving His life in your place. The innocent for the guilty, so that if you will repent, and call upon Him you can be saved.

A closing note: Even though He died for your sins, this does not automatically mean that you are going to benefit from His sacrifice. If you do nothing with Christ, or refuse to surrender to Him, you cannot obtain eternal life. Call upon Him today, and He will save you.

Characteristics of a Disciple of Jesus Christ

The evidence of salvation is a transformed life. Without obedience to Christ we cannot claim to be a His disciples. If we are not His disciples, then we are not actually saved.

(Matthew 28:18-20 NKJV) And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. {19} “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, {20} “teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

“Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer

(1 John 2:4 NKJV) He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

(Luke 6:46 NKJV) “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do the things which I say?

Unknowingly, we have allowed a dumbing down of biblical discipleship.

“Christianity is not a school for the teaching of moral virtue, the polishing of our manners, or forming us to live a life of this world with decency and gentility. It is deeper and more divine in its designs, and much nobler ends. It implies an entire life, a dedication of ourselves, our souls, our bodies unto God in the strictest and highest sense of the words.” William Law

“Jesus in His extremism insists that we surrender all our relationships, our resources, our careers, our futures-our total lives-to His lordship…In becoming Christian it appears that many of us have unquestionably attempted to layer our faith right over the top of the secular values with which we have been raised. We have simply accepted cultural expectations as largely unquestioned givens. For many, this business of following Christ seems to be placing a little “Jesus veneer” over middle- and upper middle-class lifestyles and their implicit values. That simply won’t work.” Tom Sine,Taking Discipleship Seriously

To be a disciple of Christ, one must actually follow Christ. “When someone claims to have faith in Christ, he must also commit to follow Christ. Remember, Jesus taught that faith meant to follow Him. Anything less is something else – a wish, a desire, or a good intention. But it’s not faith, because faith means to follow. Bill Hull ‘The Complete Book of Discipleship’

(Luke 9:23 NKJV) Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.

What are the specifics of discipleship?

1. Going public: While salvation must be personally received on an individual basis, the idea of our faith in Christ as a private matter is completely contrary to the teachings of Christ Himself.

(Matthew 10:32-33 NKJV) “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. {33} “But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.

(Matthew 5:14-16 NKJV) “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. {15} “Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. {16} “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

2. Knowing the truth: If we are to be followers of Christ, we must know His word.

(John 8:31-32 NLT) Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you keep obeying my teachings. {32} And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

(Matthew 11:29-30 NLT) Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls. {30} For my yoke fits perfectly, and the burden I give you is light.”

3. Mentors: A disciple must have those who demonstrate following Christ.

(1 Corinthians 11:1 NLT) And you should follow my example, just as I follow Christ’s

(2 Timothy 2:2 NLT) You have heard me teach many things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Teach these great truths to trustworthy people who are able to pass them on to others.

4. Accountability: A disciple must have those to whom they give account.

(Hebrews 13:17 NLT) Obey your spiritual leaders and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they know they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this joyfully and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit.

(1 Peter 5:5 GWT) Young people, in a similar way, place yourselves under the authority of spiritual leaders. Furthermore, all of you must serve each other with humility, because God opposes the arrogant but favors the humble.

5. Structure: Structure gives us boundaries, and a format for developing godly habits, and character.

(1 Corinthians 14:40 NKJV) Let all things be done decently and in order.

(Titus 1:4-5 NKJV) To Titus, a true son in our common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior. {5} For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you;

6. Godly fellowship: A disciple needs relationships, where they experience love and security.

(Acts 2:42 NKJV) And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.

(Philippians 2:20-22 NLT) I have no one else like Timothy, who genuinely cares about your welfare. {21} All the others care only for themselves and not for what matters to Jesus Christ. {22} But you know how Timothy has proved himself. Like a son with his father, he has helped me in preaching the Good News.

A disciple abides in Christ through the Word and prayer. (John 15:7)

A disciple bears much fruit (John 15:8)

A disciple demonstrates his/her love for God through obedience. (John 15:9)

A disciple possesses joy.

A disciple loves as Christ loves us. (John 15:12-13)

Breaking Spiritual Inertia

(2 Timothy 1:6 NLT) This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you…

“Many present day Christians seemed to have experienced three stages: condemnation, salvation, and stagnation. Babyhood is a delightful thing: Perpetual babyhood is deplorable….A spiritual revival is not important to the Church and to America: It is imperative! At this moment…the Church is plagued with inertia.” Leonard Ravenhill (Revival God’s Way)

If we were to be totally honest with ourselves, we would have to admit that overall, the church in the United States is far more self serving than actually God serving. Far too much of our ministry revolves around feeding the fed, and reaching the reached. Most of our church growth is no more than transfer growth, where believers from one church relocate to another church. Very little of our actual growth seems to come from those who are being reached with the gospel.

Adding to this dilemma, we are witnessing an ever increasing anti-church movement among many professing Christians. I would suggest that this is not driven by knowledge of Scripture, and obedience to Christ, but rather by a misinterpretation of what following Christ actually involves.

I Will Build My Church. We have mistakenly supposed that knowledge of Christ equals obedience to Christ.

“Perhaps the question we need to ask ourselves is, “Does the gospel we preach produce disciples, or does it produce consumers of religious goods and services?” Bill Hull (On Being and Making Followers of Christ)

(Matthew 7:20-21 NLT) Yes, the way to identify a tree or a person is by the kind of fruit that is produced. {21} “Not all people who sound religious are really godly. They may refer to me as ‘Lord,’ but they still won’t enter the Kingdomof Heaven. The decisive issue is whether they obey my Father in heaven.

“Too many Christians are pew sitting consumers. Up to 80% of some congregations are simply consumers.” Howard Culbertson

A faith that does nothing is worth nothing. (James 2:18-20 The Message) Not so fast. You can no more show me your works apart from your faith than I can show you my faith apart from my works. Faith and works, works and faith, fit together hand in glove. 19-20Do I hear you professing to believe in the one and only God, but then observe you complacently sitting back as if you had done something wonderful? That’s just great. Demons do that, but what good does it do them? Use your heads! Do you suppose for a minute that you can cut faith and works in two and not end up with a corpse on your hands?

“The gospel is free, thank God, but that does not mean that it is “cheap and easy,” and all too often that is the kind of gospel that has been presented.” Arthur Wallis, (The Radical Christian)

The Great Commission: If the commission to make disciples of all nations is rightfully called ‘the Great Commission,’ should it not be of the greatest importance to us who claim to be disciples of Jesus Christ?

“If people are lost outside of Christ, and if faith in Jesus Christ is the only avenue of redemption, what could possibly be a higher priority than spreading the gospel as far as we can as fast as we can?” David Shibley

We must change our focus from serving ourselves to obeying the great commission. (Matthew 28:19-20 NLT) Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. {20} Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

We are to make disciples of all nations, not merely converts with fire insurance. We are to teach them to obey the commands of Jesus Christ.

“Believing in Jesus has no meaning if we don’t follow Him in discipleship. Believing without discipleship isn’t believing. It’s agreeing to a set of facts about a religious figure. The problem we face is that we have created and taught a faith that doesn’t transform people.” Bill Hull

While we may not all be called to actually go to the nations as missionaries, the greater point is that reaching the nations should still be a burning passion of our hearts. (Matthew 24:14 NKJV) “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.

(Acts 1:8 NKJV) “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judeaand Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

The main objective of the baptism with the Holy Spirit is to equip us to go. First to Jerusalem (where we live), next to Samaria, (the surrounding area), finally to the world, (every nation on earth).

If we were to be brutally honest with ourselves, we would have to conclude that the church in the United Statesis far more interested in serving self than selfishly serving a lost and dying world. (Luke 16:19-21 NLT) Jesus said, “There was a certain rich man who was splendidly clothed and who lived each day in luxury. {20} At his door lay a diseased beggar named Lazarus. {21} As Lazarus lay there longing for scraps from the rich man’s table, the dogs would come and lick his open sores.

This story could easily serve as an example of the overindulged church in this country, with the spiritually starving in the nations who are crying out for a mere crumb of bread. I would have to admit that by far my greatest frustration as a pastor in this nation is the lack of spiritual appetite exhibited by so many of God’s people.

(Mark 4:18-19 Amplified Bible) And the ones sown among the thorns are others who hear the Word; 19Then the cares and anxieties of the world and distractions of the age, and the pleasure and delight and false glamour and deceitfulness of riches, and the craving and passionate desire for other things creep in and choke and suffocate the Word, and it becomes fruitless.

“The question before us is this: Is there enough passion in the soul of the church to carry this holiness message to the peoples of this world? Our problem is not with our profession, but with our passion. Our problem is not with our procedures, but with our passion. Our problem is not with our policy, but with our passion. Our problem is not with our purpose, but with our passion. Our problem is not with our programs, but with our passion.

When it is all said and done: If we lose our passion, we lose our movement.” Jim Diehl, Nazarene general superintendent

“The coming revival is not ultimately that we might feel better or even have a more decent society in which to live. The purpose of revival is to fire the Church with divine energy for her divine assignment.” David Shibley

I am concerned that we have set our sights so low in this nation, that we are willing to celebrate even the most meager results as if it were a great victory.

“We honour God when we ask for great things. It is a humiliating thing to think we are satisfied with very small results.”D.L. Moody

“Let us be satisfied with nothing else than leaving the deepest mark on our generation.” John R Mott

Obedience, the Evidence of Salvation

(Luke 9:23-25 NKJV) Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and followMe. {24} “For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. {25} “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?

Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, “Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ.”

Bill Hull, in his book ‘The Complete Book of Discipleship,’ states, “The American gospel teaches that faith equals agreement with a set of religious facts. Believing in Jesus has no meaning if we don’t follow him in discipleship. Believing without discipleship isn’t believing, it’s agreeing to a set of facts about a religious figure. The problem we face is that we have taught a faith that doesn’t transform people….We’ve made the test for salvation doctrinal rather than behavioral, ritualizing it with walking the aisle, praying to receive Christ, or signing a doctrinal statement. Perhaps we’ve made it so easy to get into “the life” that we’ve made it nearly impossible to live the life.”

William Carey, the pioneer missionary to India said, “Let nothing short of radical change of heart satisfy you in your coverts…”

Discipleship without obedience to Christ is not discipleship at all. Discipleship requires obedience to Christ. Without obedience we cannot claim to be His disciples. We have created a man made Christ in this nation, who demands no commitment, with a cross that requires no crucifixion. The result is a Christianity that lacks credibility, and has been made void of its power.

Salvation will result in action. (James 2:20-22 NLT) Fool! When will you ever learn that faith that does not result in good deeds is useless? {21} Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was declared right with God because of what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? {22} You see, he was trusting God so much that he was willing to do whatever God told him to do. His faith was made complete by what he did–by his actions.

Tom Sine, in his book “Taking Discipleship Seriously,’ says, “Jesus in His extremism insists that we surrender all our relationships, our resources, our careers, our futures-our total lives-to His lordship…In becoming Christian it appears that many of us have unquestionably attempted to layer our faith right over the top of the secular values with which we have been raised. We have simply accepted cultural expectations as largely unquestioned givens. For many, this business of following Christ seems to be placing a little “Jesus veneer” over middle- and upper middle-class lifestyles and their implicit values. That simply won’t work.”

Jim Wallis “To be a Christian is to be possessed and dominated by thekingdom ofGod. Salvation must not be seen as merely an individual event in which the individual has a part. Thekingdom ofGod has come to transform the world and us with it by the power of God, in Jesus Christ. The cross of Christ is not just the symbol of our atonement but the very pattern and definition of our lives, the very means of the new order that has invaded the world in Christ…Church historians may someday describe our period as the ‘American Captivity of the Church.’ It is no less real than the ‘Babylonian Captivity’ in the history ofIsrael.”

We have erroneously come to believe that because our salvation cannot be earned it requires nothing in return. This has created a distorted, cheap understanding of the gospel, where following Jesus has been reduced to nothing more than a sinner’s prayer.

To claim that we are Christians without obedience to the commands of Christ, is truly delusional. The evidence of salvation is obedience to Christ.

(1 John 2:4 NKJV) He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

Boldly Proclaim the Truth

“Here is the church’s shocking dilemma. What do you say to a generation that is dead wrong, and still keep them listening.” Mario Murillo.

I have been a Christian since 1982, and over the past 30 years I have seen a great acceleration of the moral decline that was just beginning to really take hold in the United States when I was first saved. I am sorry to say that for the most part Christians have not handled this change very well.

One of the most disturbing trends that I have witnessed within the Christian community as a whole, is what I would call a ‘dumbing down’ to the culture rather than standing against it. More specifically I am referring to the move toward a more non confrontational approach to dealing with the proliferation of immorality, as the United States has moved away from the historic biblical worldview, to a more hedonistic (pleasure-seeking) approach to life.

Throughout history God has raised up men and women who openly stood in opposition to the moral rot of the culture, and the social inequalities they saw all around them. In addition, these men and women also confronted the weakness, and compromise which became embedded within the church.

Yet today far too many Christians imagine that confrontation with the darkness of the age is to be avoided at almost any cost. Far too many pastors have abandoned the direct proclamation of the truth, for more of a soft sell, life enhancement method of ministry. While I am convinced that while the intentions of most of these ministers are sincere, the damage that is taking place within the body of Christ in the West may take decades to reverse.

With this said, I would like to take a look at a few of the fundamental erroneous beliefs that have been perpetrated both within, and without Christianity in the West in recent years.

We must be careful not to offend the lost: Believers seem to be overly concerned that if they proclaim the truth they might run the risk of offending those who are not Christians, and thus hinder their coming to Christ. While we certainly must be wise in our handling of the truth, we cannot avoid offending the lost. The very nature of the cross of Jesus Christ is an offence to those who are blinded by darkness.

… But some people do not believe in him. To them he is, `the stone that the men who were building would not use. But now it is the chief stone at the corner.’ And to them he is also, `a stone on which people will hit their feet, and a rock that will make them fall down.’ They hit their feet on it, because they do not obey the word. It was planned that this would happen to them! (1 Peter 2:7-8 Today’s English)

You see Jesus causes people to stumble because man cannot come to God on his own terms. This is one of the most offensive ideas to the pride of the human heart. The very idea of humbling themselves before God is offensive to the self-righteous sinner.

People have been turned off to the in your face preaching of the gospel, so we should try to slowly divulge the gospel to them in non threatening terms. This belief has led to the seeker sensitive, Emergent Church movement that is actually doing a great deal of harm to the long-term ministry of the church.

While the idea of befriending sinners is certainly biblical the idea of compromise with the culture is not. The problem with this approach to the ministry of the gospel is that it has led to a life enrichment type of message. The lost are brought to believe that Jesus will enhance their lives. Rather than clearly proclaiming the truth, and calling for the sinner to repent, and turn from their ungodly lifestyle. This approach often could be summarized with the catchy phrase “God has a wonderful plan for your life.”

Unfortunately, when the lost do respond to this message, what they often receive as a result is what the Bible clearly promised would happen. They are confronted with persecution, tribulation and affliction for the sake of the word of God, and they are offended and fall away. (Matthew 13:21) What this actually does is causes people to follow Christ as long as things go well, but as soon as trouble comes these people fall away from the faith.

I have met many people who were raised in church, or who once professed Christ, but now are lost as a Goose. Most of these people fell away because they had trouble that came into their lives. This is clearly the result of a man centered, life enrichment type of message. Their motive for following Christ was not because they were truly sorry for their sin against God, but because they wanted to see what God would do for them.

Jesus never condemned sinners, so neither should we. While at face value this sounds very religious, and sanctimonious (smug) it is actually a very misleading statement. The premise with this assertion is that Jesus simply loved people where they were at, and left them alone to live their lives as they saw fit. While Jesus was merciful with the humble and broken He never allowed them to continue in their sin. Take for example the woman caught in the act of adultery. Jesus through His strength of character, and mere presence defended her before her accusers. However you will notice that He never allowed her to simply stay in her sin.

John 8:9-11 (NKJV) Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. 10 When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”

If you study the ministry of Jesus you will notice that when He ministered to the humble and broken He would show them a great deal of mercy, tenderness, and compassion. However when He confronted the self-righteous and hard hearted He rebuked them, and gave them the full extent of the consequences of their sin.

Sinners are already condemned: (John 3:17-18 NIV) For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

Apart from the salvation that is found through in Christ we are all condemned because we have all broken the laws of God, and as such deserve His justice. This is what makes the good news truly good news when we realize how merciful God has been to us.

The fact of the matter is that most people are actually self- righteous idolaters. Now they would never come right out and admit this because they are simply blind to the very idea.

They are self-righteous because they are relying upon their own human goodness, or understanding to sort the world out. In their minds their as good as the next guy, so why should they listen to anyone who would suggest otherwise, least of all some of Bible thumper.

They are idolaters because they have constructed a god of their own making. A god who agrees with anything they choose to do. In their mind god is just fine with whatever type of lifestyle they are engaged in. This is why they make statements such as “To me god is…” or “My god is…” or “My god would never…” You see their god doesn’t exist except in their minds. He is a god of their own making. Actually they are their own law giver, and whatever they imagine suits them is just fine.

You see a sinner loves sin like flies love manure. They just can’t get enough of it. The sinner is trying to find God like a thief is trying to find a police man. This is why sinners hate the truth of God’s word, because it shines the light on the darkness of their sin, and they will do anything to protect their addiction to sin.

Truth is hate to those who hate the truth. (John 3:19-20 NIV) This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 All those who do evil hate the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.

People reject the truth because their deeds are evil, and they hate the light because it exposes this reality in their lives. The truth of the word of God is like drawing back the curtain in a dark room. As soon as the rays of the light shine in you can easily see the dust that was not visible before. The light did not create the dust, but merely reveals what was already present.

Our responsibility is to simply proclaim the truth. The Holy Spirit will then bring forth the transformation by using the word of God to bring forth conviction in the lives of those who hear. Just because people react with hatred or opposition is no indicator that the truth is not working in their lives, so we must not draw back in fear of their reaction, but simply speak the truth in love.

Philippians 1:27-28 (Phillips) But whatever happens, make sure that your everyday life is worthy of the Gospel of Christ. So that whether I do come and see you, or merely hear about you from a distance, I may know that you are standing fast in a united spirit, battling with a single mind for the faith of the Gospel and not caring two straws for your enemies. The very fact that they are your enemies is plain proof that they are lost to God, while the fact that you have such men as enemies is plain proof that you yourselves are being saved by God. You are given, in this battle, the privilege not merely of believing in Christ but also of suffering for his sake. It is now your turn to take part in that battle you once saw me engaged in, and which, in point of fact, I am still fighting.

The Spirit of the Mind

(2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

In order to walk in the newness of life that we have as a result of our union with Christ, we must live free from our past. We can never walk in the liberty we have in Christ if we are forever looking back. You can never live in victory until you learn to let go of your past. You must let go of the sin that you once found so appealing, as well as the injustice, pain and wounds that occurred.

Forgetting the Life of Sin: We must put away the old life of sin we used to live. (Luke 9:62 NLT)…”Anyone who puts a hand to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God.”

(Luke 17:32-33 NKJV) “Remember Lot’s wife.”Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.

Lot’s wife stands as a memorial of the consequences of looking back at the old life of sin. God turned her into a pillar of salt so that all who passed by and saw her would remember the destructive consequences of sin. In like manner we use to live as the rest of the world, but now we must put away the old sinful life. (Ephesians 2:1-10 NLT) Once you were dead, doomed forever because of your many sins. {2} You used to live just like the rest of the world, full of sin, obeying Satan, the mighty prince of the power of the air. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. {3} All of us used to live that way, following the passions and desires of our evil nature. We were born with an evil nature, and we were under God’s anger just like everyone else. {4} But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so very much, {5} that even while we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s special favor that you have been saved!) {6} For he raised us from the dead along with Christ, and we are seated with him in the heavenly realms–all because we are one with Christ Jesus.

Put on the New Man: We must be renewed in the spirit of our minds. The spirit of our mind has to do with our attitudes, and beliefs. We must change the way we look at everything in life. This has to do with changing the motives, and very intents of our hearts. (Ephesians 4:1-32 NKJV)…(Verses 22-24) that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, {23} and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, {24} and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

(NLT) throw off your old evil nature and your former way of life, which is rotten through and through, full of lust and deception. Instead, there must be a spiritual renewal of your thoughts and attitudes. You must display a new nature because you are a new person, created in God’s likeness–righteous, holy, and true.

Amplified Bible… (verse 23)…but let your minds be remade, and your whole nature thus transformed…

Until we renew our minds to think the thoughts of God after Him, we will forever be held in bondage to the old attitudes and patterns of thought of the old life that we use to live. (Romans 12:2 NKJV) And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

The children ofIsraelin the wilderness stand as a vivid reminder of an entire nation of people who could not leave the old way of thinking. As a consequence their thinking caused them to wander in the wilderness for forty years, and ultimately die without ever having received the promise of the new life that was rightfully theirs. Many died out in the desert; they wouldn’t let Jesus take them in. Our Father brought them out ofEgypt, but He couldn’t getEgyptout of them.

God couldn’t get the slave mentality out of the Israelites, and as a result they died in the wilderness. It took an entirely new generation to embrace freedom, and the responsibility of freedom before God could renew the spirit of their minds. Only Joshua & Caleb were able to break free from the slave mentality of bondage inEgypt.

The Promised Land is a type of our inheritance in Christ. A type of the liberty and life of abundance we are called to enjoy in union with Christ, but unless we let go of the past, renew our minds we will wander in the wilderness of sin, bad habits, and bondage our whole life. (Hebrews 3:7-19 NKJV) Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you will hear His voice, {8} Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness, {9} Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, And saw My works forty years. {10} Therefore I was angry with that generation, And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart, And they have not known My ways.’

The word of God in union with the Holy Spirit is the means by which God renews our minds and changes our attitudes. As we build God’s word into our hearts through hearing the word, meditating upon the word, and communion with God, we will be transformed by the Spirit of God. (2 Corinthians 3:17-18 NKJV) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

(Ezekiel 36:26-27 NKJV) “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. {27} “I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.

As the word of God goes into our mind it has a transforming effect upon our entire life. (Colossians 3:16 NKJV) Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

(James 1:21 KJV) Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

America’s Most Anti-Bible President

David Barton – 02/29/2012 www.wallbuilders.com

When one observes President Obama’s unwillingness to accommodate America’s four-century long religious conscience protection through his attempts to require Catholics to go against their own doctrines and beliefs, one is tempted to say that he is anti-Catholic. But that characterization would not be correct. Although he has recently singled out Catholics, he has equally targeted traditional Protestant beliefs over the past four years.

So since he has attacked Catholics and Protestants, one is tempted to say that he is anti-Christian. But that, too, would be inaccurate. He has been equally disrespectful in his appalling treatment of religious Jews in general and Israel in particular. So perhaps the most accurate description of his antipathy toward Catholics, Protestants, religious Jews, and the Jewish nation would be to characterize him as anti-Biblical. And then when his hostility toward Biblical people of faith is contrasted with his preferential treatment of Muslims and Muslim nations, it further strengthens the accuracy of the anti-Biblical descriptor. In fact, there have been numerous clearly documented times when his pro-Islam positions have been the cause of his anti-Biblical actions.

Listed below in chronological order are (1) numerous records of his attacks on Biblical persons or organizations; (2) examples of the hostility toward Biblical faith that have become evident in the past three years in the Obama-led military; (3) a listing of his open attacks on Biblical values; and finally (4) a listing of numerous incidents of his preferential deference for Islam’s activities and positions, including letting his Islamic advisors guide and influence his hostility toward people Biblical faith.

1. Acts of hostility toward people of Biblical faith:

April 2008 – Obama speaks disrespectfully of Christians, saying they “cling to guns or religion” and have an “antipathy to people who aren’t like them.” 1

February 2009 – Obama announces plans to revoke conscience protection for health workers who refuse to participate in medical activities that go against their beliefs, and fully implements the plan in February 2011. 2

April 2009 – When speaking at Georgetown University, Obama orders that a monogram symbolizing Jesus’ name be covered when he is making his speech. 3

May 2009 – Obama declines to host services for the National Prayer Day (a day established by federal law) at the White House. 4

April 2009 – In a deliberate act of disrespect, Obama nominated three pro-abortion ambassadors to the Vatican; of course, the pro-life Vatican rejected all three. 5

October 19, 2010 – Obama begins deliberately omitting the phrase about “the Creator” when quoting the Declaration of Independence – an omission he has made on no less than seven occasions. 6

November 2010 – Obama misquotes the National Motto, saying it is “E pluribus unum” rather than “In God We Trust” as established by federal law. 7

January 2011 – After a federal law was passed to transfer a WWI Memorial in the Mojave Desert to private ownership, the U. S. Supreme Court ruled that the cross in the memorial could continue to stand, but the Obama administration refused to allow the land to be transferred as required by law, and refused to allow the cross to be re-erected as ordered by the Court. 8

February 2011 – Although he filled posts in the State Department, for more than two years Obama did not fill the post of religious freedom ambassador, an official that works against religious persecution across the world; he filled it only after heavy pressure from the public and from Congress. 9

April 2011 – For the first time in American history, Obama urges passage of a non-discrimination law that does not contain hiring protections for religious groups, forcing religious organizations to hire according to federal mandates without regard to the dictates of their own faith, thus eliminating conscience protection in hiring. 10

August 2011 – The Obama administration releases its new health care rules that override religious conscience protections for medical workers in the areas of abortion and contraception. 11

November 2011 – Obama opposes inclusion of President Franklin Roosevelt’s famous D-Day Prayer in the WWII Memorial. 12

November 2011 – Unlike previous presidents, Obama studiously avoids any religious references in his Thanksgiving speech. 13

December 2011 – The Obama administration denigrates other countries’ religious beliefs as an obstacle to radical homosexual rights. 14

January 2012 – The Obama administration argues that the First Amendment provides no protection for churches and synagogues in hiring their pastors and rabbis. 15

February 2012 – The Obama administration forgives student loans in exchange for public service, but announces it will no longer forgive student loans if the public service is related to religion. 16

2. Acts of hostility from the Obama-led military toward people of Biblical faith:

June 2011 – The Department of Veterans Affairs forbids references to God and Jesus during burial ceremonies at Houston National Cemetery. 17

August 2011 – The Air Force stops teaching the Just War theory to officers in California because the course is taught by chaplains and is based on a philosophy introduced by St. Augustine in the third century AD – a theory long taught by civilized nations across the world (except America). 18

September 2011 – Air Force Chief of Staff prohibits commanders from notifying airmen of programs and services available to them from chaplains. 19

September 2011 – The Army issues guidelines for Walter Reed Medical Center stipulating that “No religious items (i.e. Bibles, reading materials and/or facts) are allowed to be given away or used during a visit.” 20

November 2011 – The Air Force Academy rescinds support for Operation Christmas Child, a program to send holiday gifts to impoverished children across the world, because the program is run by a Christian charity. 21

November 2011 – The Air Force Academy pays $80,000 to add a Stonehenge-like worship center for pagans, druids, witches and Wiccans. 22

February 2012 – The U. S. Military Academy at West Point disinvites three star Army general and decorated war hero Lieutenant General William G. (“Jerry”) Boykin (retired) from speaking at an event because he is an outspoken Christian. 23

February 2012 – The Air Force removes “God” from the patch of Rapid Capabilities Office (the word on the patch was in Latin: Dei). 24

February 2012 – The Army orders Catholic chaplains not to read a letter to parishioners that their archbishop asked them to read. 25

April 2012 – A checklist for Air Force Inns will no longer include ensuring that a Bible is available in rooms for those who want to use them.26

3. Acts of hostility toward Biblical values:

January 2009 – Obama lifts restrictions on U.S. government funding for groups that provide abortion services or counseling abroad, forcing taxpayers to fund pro-abortion groups that either promote or perform abortions in other nations. 27

January 2009 – President Obama’s nominee for deputy secretary of state asserts that American taxpayers are required to pay for abortions and that limits on abortion funding are unconstitutional. 28

March 2009 – The Obama administration shut out pro-life groups from attending a White House-sponsored health care summit. 29

March 2009 – Obama orders taxpayer funding of embryonic stem cell research. 30

March 2009 – Obama gave $50 million for the UNFPA, the UN population agency that promotes abortion and works closely with Chinese population control officials who use forced abortions and involuntary sterilizations. 31

May 2009 – The White House budget eliminates all funding for abstinence-only education and replaces it with “comprehensive” sexual education, repeatedly proven to increase teen pregnancies and abortions. 32 He continues the deletion in subsequent budgets. 33

May 2009 – Obama officials assemble a terrorism dictionary calling pro-life advocates violent and charging that they use racism in their “criminal” activities. 34

July 2009 – The Obama administration illegally extends federal benefits to same-sex partners of Foreign Service and Executive Branch employees, in direction violation of the federal Defense of Marriage Act. 35

September 16, 2009 – The Obama administration appoints as EEOC Commissioner Chai Feldblum, who asserts that society should “not tolerate” any “private beliefs,” including religious beliefs, if they may negatively affect homosexual “equality.” 36

August 2010 – The Obama administration Cuts funding for 176 abstinence education programs. 38

September 2010 – The Obama administration tells researchers to ignore a judge’s decision striking down federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. 39

February 2011 – Obama directs the Justice Department to stop defending the federal Defense of Marriage Act. 40

March 2011 – The Obama administration refuses to investigate videos showing Planned Parenthood helping alleged sex traffickers get abortions for victimized underage girls. 41

July 2011 – Obama allows homosexuals to serve openly in the military, reversing a policy originally instituted by George Washington in March 1778. 42

September 2011 – The Pentagon directs that military chaplains may perform same-sex marriages at military facilities in violation of the federal Defense of Marriage Act. 43

October 2011 – The Obama administration eliminates federal grants to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops for their extensive programs that aid victims of human trafficking because the Catholic Church is anti-abortion. 44

4. Acts of preferentialism for Islam:

May 2009 – While Obama does not host any National Day of Prayer event at the White House, he does host White House Iftar dinners in honor of Ramadan. 45

April 2010 – Christian leader Franklin Graham is disinvited from the Pentagon’s National Day of Prayer Event because of complaints from the Muslim community. 46

April 2010 – The Obama administration requires rewriting of government documents and a change in administration vocabulary to remove terms that are deemed offensive to Muslims, including jihad, jihadists, terrorists, radical Islamic, etc. 47

August 2010 – Obama speaks with great praise of Islam and condescendingly of Christianity. 48

August 2010 – Obama went to great lengths to speak out on multiple occasions on behalf of building an Islamic mosque at Ground Zero, while at the same time he was silent about a Christian church being denied permission to rebuild at that location. 49

2010 – While every White House traditionally issues hundreds of official proclamations and statements on numerous occasions, this White House avoids traditional Biblical holidays and events but regularly recognizes major Muslim holidays, as evidenced by its 2010 statements on Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr, Hajj, and Eid-ul-Adha. 50

October 2011 – Obama’s Muslim advisers block Middle Eastern Christians’ access to the White House. 51

February 2012 – The Obama administration makes effulgent apologies for Korans being burned by the U. S. military, 52 but when Bibles were burned by the military, numerous reasons were offered why it was the right thing to do. 53

Many of these actions are literally unprecedented – this is the first time they have happened in four centuries of American history. The hostility of President Obama toward Biblical faith and values is without equal from any previous American president.
