The Triune Godhead

GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT1

The tri-fold nature of God: God is one, manifest in three distinct persons. (Psalms 19:1-2 NKJV) The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. {2} Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge.

The creation is reflective of the Creator: All of creation is stamped with God’s nature upon it, and testifies of the triune distinctiveness of God.

  • In Scripture numbers represent different aspects of God’s dealings with His creation. The number seven is the number of completion, because God rested on the seventh day, and will dwell with His creation in rest on the seventh millennium from the creation.
  • The number six is the number representing man, as God created man on the sixth day of creation.
  • The number 40 is the number of testing.
  • The number eight represents new beginnings or renewal.
  • The number three is the number of God.

The number of God is stamped upon all of creation: God who dwells in eternity created time to deal with the natural world. Time is measured in three dimensions – Past, Present & Future. We have learned to navigate by Altitude, Longitude, and Latitude. All matter consists of atoms that are comprised of Protons, Neutrons, & Electrons. Man who is created in the image of God was made as a triune being – Spirit, Soul & Body

(1 Thessalonians 5:23 NLT)  Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until that day when our Lord Jesus Christ comes again.

One God, Not Three: One God who is manifest in three distinct in persons, God the Father, God the Son & God the Holy Spirit. (Mark 12:29 NKJV)  Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one.

Illustration: An egg has three distinct parts that make up the whole. We consist of three distinct parts (spirit, soul, and body) yet we function as one, not three.

The Scriptures reveal the trinity of God: (Genesis 1:26 NKJV)  Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

This is speaking of God in the plural, indicating a triune Godhead.

(John 1:1-3 NKJV)  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. {2} He was in the beginning with God. {3} All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

Jesus, the Word of God was in the beginning with God the Father, and the Holy Spirit

(Matthew 3:13-17 NLT)  Then Jesus went from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. {14} But John didn’t want to baptize him. “I am the one who needs to be baptized by you,” he said, “so why are you coming to me?” {15} But Jesus said, “It must be done, because we must do everything that is right.” So then John baptized him. {16} After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. {17} And a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, and I am fully pleased with him.”

Here we see Jesus being baptized, the Holy Spirit manifest in the form of a dove, and the Father speaking from heaven.

(Hebrews 1 NLT)  Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. {2} But now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he made the universe and everything in it. {3} The Son reflects God’s own glory, and everything about him represents God exactly. He sustains the universe by the mighty power of his command. After he died to cleanse us from the stain of sin, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God of heaven. {4} This shows that God’s Son is far greater than the angels, just as the name God gave him is far greater than their names. {5} For God never said to any angel what he said to Jesus: “You are my Son. Today I have become your Father.” And again God said, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son.” {6} And then, when he presented his honored Son to the world, God said, “Let all the angels of God worship him.” {7} God calls his angels “messengers swift as the wind, and servants made of flaming fire.” {8} But to his Son he says, “Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever. Your royal power is expressed in righteousness. {9} You love what is right and hate what is wrong. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you, pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on anyone else.” {10} And, “Lord, in the beginning you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. {11} Even they will perish, but you remain forever. They will wear out like old clothing. {12} You will roll them up like an old coat. They will fade away like old clothing. But you are always the same; you will never grow old.” {13} And God never said to an angel, as he did to his Son, “Sit in honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.” {14} But angels are only servants. They are spirits sent from God to care for those who will receive salvation.

This is a wonderful description of the interaction between Jesus, the Son of God, and His Father. Jesus sits at His Father’s right hand in the heavens.

The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are revealed as completely united, yet distinct in their relation to one another, and man.
