The New Birth, and the Fruit of the Spirit

The Fruits of the SpiritThe new birth produces the fruit of the Spirit of God. When we are born again the Holy Spirit recreates our human spirit in the nature of God. (2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT) What this means is that those who become Christians become new persons. They are not the same anymore, for the old life is gone. A new life has begun!

The New Birth: You must be born again. (John 3:1-8 NKJV)… {3} Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”… {6} “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Temples of God: When we are born again we receive the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. We become the temple of the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 6:17-19 NKJV) But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. {18} Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. {19} Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?

The new birth brings with it an everlasting well of living water. (John 4:5-15 NKJV)…{13} Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, {14} “but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

This fountain of water is for our nourishment, and growth. It is a well of the Zoë life of God, the quality of life that only God can give us, or the God kind of life. Only through the work of the Holy Spirit do we have union with God, and part in the family of God.

(John 1:12-13 NKJV) But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: {13} who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

(Romans 8:15-16 NKJV) For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” {16} The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God

Through the new birth we begin to bear the fruit of the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-25 NKJV) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, {23} gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. {24} And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. {25} If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

The Spirit of God does not grow the fruit, we do. God’s nature in us begins to cause the fruit of the Spirit to grow. (John 15: 1-5 NLT) “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

Fruit has to do with character development. All of these fruit are characteristics of God’s nature.
(2 Peter 1:2-11 NKJV) Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, {3} as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, {4} by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. {5} But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, {6} to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, {7} to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. {8} For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. {9} For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. {10} Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; {11} for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

We are the ones that grow the fruit, while the Holy Spirit enables us to do so. (John 15:1-17 NKJV)… {4} “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me…

As we abide in Christ, His life and nature begins to saturate our thinking, and our will become conformed to His. The natural process of abiding in the life of God is to produce the fruit of the Spirit.
